A warm, friendly, and multicultural village, Cotignac has attracted musicians, artists,
writers and businessmen from other parts of France and Europe as well as North America and
as far away as Australia. They come here to live out their lives and draw inspiration from
the village's tranquility and sense of space. At
its heart is the Cours Gambetta where the thick foliage of plane trees shades the terraces
of cafés and restaurants. There, residents and visitors can sip their coffee, wine or
Pasties in its pleasant coolness in
the Summer, or in bright sunshine in the Fall and Winter. In this community of 1,800
inhabitants, home to 18 fountains, the sound of water is never far away and it accompanies
the wandering visitor through the narrow streets and archways, past intricately carved
doorways and stone houses renovated with care and in harmony
with their surroundings. At the foot of the Rocher can be seen traces of the earliest
dwellings, caves and grottos where people and their animals sheltered from the attacks of
the Saracens and other raiders. Troglodyte living continued for some centuries as the
village slowly developed around the present Place de la Mairie and its clock-tower. This
can be seen at the Tuesday morning marché on Cours Gambetta where everyone gets together
to gossip with friends over coffee and choose among the display of local cheeses, honey,
truffles, olive oil, fruit and vegetables, home-cured ham and sausages what the next and
imminent lunch will be made of
The surroundings of Cotignac offer views into a
scenic rural life, with an abundance of vines and olive groves. There is a local wine
co-op and a large array of attractions and places of interest at proximity. There, the
traveler will spend time away from the more hectic Mediterranean coast in an area
unspoiled by masses of tourists, enjoying a wonderfully mild climate throughout the year.
The fringe seasons
of Fall and Spring are particularly appealing...
